Week 1 - Matt Faulkner
Introduction
1. Please
introduce yourself, your background, and your expectations from this
course.
Hello everyone.
My "go-by" name is Matt so feel free to address me as such. Then again
you may call me Matthew as I'm equally attached to that as well. I am in
the Air Force, stationed at Langley AFB. I've been married for almost 9
years and have a 17 month old daughter.
2. Please
tell us if you have sufficient background to deal with this course.
I really don't
have any background in Environmental Science as a Computer Science
Major, however I'm an avid contributor to the WWF and subscriber to
National Geographic. I really enjoy reading and learning about the world
around us and often find myself searching for ways to to my part in
protecting the vital resources earth provides us.
3. Please
tell us if this is your first online course. Please let us know why are
you taking an online course and if you have any questions and/or
concerns that you would like to share with the class.
I've been with
UMUC for a number of years, but work has led to a few long breaks along
the way. I've taken about 60 hours of class at UMUC, with most of it
coming through WebTycho (WT). Although I'd prefer to jam my classtime
into 8 week sessions, the DE format suits my schedule well enough. I've
found out, as many of the other previously enrolled WT students have is,
that in order to do well and not get overburdened with homework is to
stay on top of the readings.
4. If this is
not your first online course, please share your previous experience with
online courses and let us know what is the best way in your opinion to
teach and learn in an online environment.
See above.
Additionally, I agree with at least one student in that DE courses are
designed to be self-study, yet many of these courses still have group
projects to complete. I'm really glad that I'll be able to get this
course completed and graded on my own merits and not those of one of my
classmates. I also encouracge each of you to really expand on your
answers. In my many DE classes here at UMUC, I've found that many
students are happy to provide a nice short "note" as their conference
replies, when in fact the reply may call for something more in depth. I
urger each of you to really use this "classroom" to say what you feel
and really expand on your thoughts. It may take a few minutes to type a
response out, but I guarantee we will reallt "hear" what you are trying
to say if you spend those few extra minutes composing your replies.
