Week 1 - Conference Reply to #3

Provide examples of Simplex and/or Half-Duplex and/or Full Duplex flows in the non-computer world, and explain your answer.

As a supervisor I have many tools available to help ensure the mission of my unit and accomplished.  I have a particular task to accomplish and limited people to make it happen.  In order to do the mission, while grooming the professional development of my subordinates I must use the tools of leadership.  In all of my dealings I must communicate the needs of the unit and myself.  While leading I could use SIMPLEX communication.  This communication comes in the form of a verbal or written reprimand.  This communication is one way with no room for other dialogue.  HALF-DUPLEX communication may involve me trying to gather information from one of my workers.  As I ask the question the will reply with what I hope is an appropriate response.  In FULL DUPLEX communication the same counseling session mentions for simplex is used however a more people oriented approach may be necessary.  This type of two-way simultaneous communication is useful when my worker comes up with the ideas and I interject when needed to facilitate the free flow of ideas.
