What is your definition of a "well-performing" memory, and how does
the creation of the memory hierarchy of fig.9-1 help to create good
performance?
Well performing memory is memory that can access and move data around
quickly. If speed were the only factor in memory then ideally a
computer would use only L1 cache. Since price ultimately plays a
role, well performing memory, using the memory hierarchy is necessary to
balance the need for speed and the need to keep costs reasonable to the
consumer.
