Week 11 - Chapter 16
Teenagers are
known for testing limits and disobeying parents. This can strain the
parent-child relationship, as well as put the adolescent into dangerous
situations. It is vital that parents keep a strong influence in their
teenagers' lives and the ability to impose limits on their teenager's
actions, while still preparing them for impending independence. In 3-6
sentences, discuss one way that parents can do this. Please draw on the
readings and/or your personal experience.
Ways that
parents keep a strong influence on their children's lives and keep their
ability to impose limits is to show support and use empathetic
responses. Show support by foster the self-regulated learning that
is important to adolescent growth. This can be accomplished in the
school setting by using more "role-playing" where students get the
opportunity to respond to a situation in a learning environment and
receive feedback. I think this type of learning environment is
good because it allows a young person to think critically about a
process and come up with a solution. If the solution isn't
feasible or doesn't result in the desired outcome, feedback is used to
encourage change in the thought process. According to Santrock,
another way adults can foster self-regulatory thinking in adolescents is
to teach goal setting. By setting goals, adolescents learn to
adjust their thinking to accomplish the desired goal.
